While condemning the Oting massacre in the “strongest term”, the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee demanded resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Nagaland Home Minister Temjen Imna Along.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, Imphal on Monday, AICC Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das asserted that HM Shah should be held responsible for the massacre of innocent civilians by Indian security forces in Mon district of Nagaland on December 4.

The Congress leader asserted that the law and order situation in Nagaland has failed, stating that the system of supervising, monitoring, controlling and channelising armed forces in Nagaland was “totally faulty”.

“Instead of behaving irresponsibly, he (HM Shah) should quit his post,” he demanded.

He also questioned whether the Union Home Ministry is functioning or not. Are they monitoring the ceasefire situation every week, he asked.

The Union Home Ministry must answer whether the information given to the Indian Army personnel was incorrect, he asserted.

Bhakta Charan Das also asserted that the BJP coalition governments in Nagaland and Center cannot play with the lives of the civilians of Nagaland and the Naga people.

He also asked, “while the entire state of Nagaland is under a ceasefire agreement, why did such incidents happen?”

Expressing “deep concern” over the “inhumane” incident, Bhakta Charan Das, demanded Ra 1 crore each to the deceased and Ra 10 lakhs to the injured as compensation. The Government of India should institute an enquiry and probe the incident so that justice can be served at the earliest, he added.

He also urged everyone to extend solidarity with the Naga brothers and sisters. No such incidents should take place in any part of the NE region, he added.

On the other hand, MPCC general secretary, MLA Alfred Arthur, speaking at the press conference, maintained that the Union government should be held responsible. This is the most gruesome murder of civilians, he added.

“Why has the Nagaland home minister, who is a BJP MLA, not resigned yet? BJP cannot contain the law and order problem in Nagaland,” he asserted..

MLA Alfred also wondered whether the NDA government is holding the people or the government with an “iron hand”.

Stating that armed forces in the country have been created under a law to protect the citizens not to annihilate them, he questioned whether the armed forces here to protect the law or the civilians?

While maintaining that the only faction of the Khaplang group of NSCN with arms operates in Myanmar, and the NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs are in peace talks with Government of India, Alfred asserted that the Indian security forces were either violating the ceasefire agreement or knowingly targeting the civilians. Either way they are in the wrong, he added.

Stating that the country has always stood by PM Modi and HM Amit Shah, be it Pathankot or Balakot, he maintained that India is much bigger than this (the massacre).

Alfred further said that India has more than one million strong Indian Army, yet it is attacking poor villagers in Mon district of Nagaland.

“We are countering China, Pakistan, and the USA. And here we are, fighting with our own civilians,” he lamented.

Such incidents might happen in Manipur, but not in places like Maharashtra or Gujarat, he said, adding “this has to stop”.
