All Manipur Progressive Farmers’ Association urged the Manipur government to avail electricity to the farmers of the state at subsidised rate for irrigation purposes.
Addressing tge media persons at the Manipur Press Club on Thursday, association member Sapam Lukhoi said that as the fuel prices skyrocketed, farmers are facing hardships when it comes to operating pumps for irrigation.
He also urged the agriculture department to streamline the seed distribution system. He maintained that it would be beneficial for the farmers if the seeds are distributed as per the soil conditions of the particular areas.
On fertilizer crisis, Lukhoi urged the state government to avail the fertilizers in a timely manner. It seems the government is unaware of the dilapidated road conditions of far flung places where the actual agricultural activities are conducted, he said and urged the government to improve the road connectivity.
As many farm produce are wasted every season there is an urgent need for a cold storage system in the state, he added.
President of the association S Ratankumar also urged the state government to conduct a survey and look into the plight of some farmers, especially in Imphal East which is facing a drought-like situation.
