Two drowned in Ukhrul district

In an unfortunate incident, two men from Ukhrul died from drowning. The incident took place on Friday around 4:45 pm when four youths from Ukhrul, travelling from Imphal towards Ukhrul, stopped over for a swim in a river flowing between Litan and TM Kasom.

OC of Litan, Apem Ngalung informed this correspondent that the victims were identified as 26-year-old Khanthing P Shimray, son of Jonathan P Shimray and 23-year-old Tonmingam Chiphang, son of Rumchuithing Chipang. Both the victims are from Tangrei locality of Ukhrul.

Litan Police informed that the body of Khanthing P Shimray was fished out on Friday and his body has been claimed by the family. With active participation by Leingangching villagers and neighbouring Kuki and Tangkhul villagers of the surrounding area, the body of Tonmingam Chiphang was discovered around 8:35am on Saturday.

OC Apem Ngalung said that the villagers had a hard time tracing the body of Tonmingam Chiphang. The river was muddy and deep, and the rescuers braved the strong current to find the body of the deceased. He said that the body of Tonmingam Chiphang will be handed over to the family this evening. He expressed gratitude to villagers in the area for their active participation in tracing the duo.
