Confederation of Chang Students’ Union (CSSU), Nagaland, on Saturday held a “Silent Protest” at the Tower Clock, Tuensang, to protest against unethical action meted out to uniformed personnel by Superintendent of Police (SP), Tuensang, Amit Nigam, on September 2.

Demanding the immediate removal of Amit Nigam, within the next 24 hours, the silent protest was attended by representatives of the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF), tribal bodies, and other students’ bodies.
Banners and placards some of which read “We Don’t Need a Goon Police”, “Remove Amit Nigam, SP Tuensang Within 24 Hours”, and others were also seen holding by the protestors.

Highlighting the incident to this correspondent over phone from Tuensang, CCSU vice-president, Ben Langpong, said that on the “unfortunate day”, the SP assigned his department driver along with some constables to carry firewood for his kitchen.

And while returning with the firewood, the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a mechanical snag and hit a toilet wall from behind and the wife of the SP who was present at the site of the incident took some pictures and forwarded the same to her husband who was attending to his duty.

Langpong also said that on rushing back to his official residence, the driver was called and was allegedly “slapped four times” by the officer during which his face mask fell off to the ground and while he was picking up the mask, the driver was reportedly “stamped upon”.

It was also alleged that the SP again slapped the victim “twice” after asking his name and the tribe he belongs to.
The next day (September 3), while the victim was on duty as usual, under the direction of the SP through a staff, was asked to repair the damage caused (toilet wall). He was warned that the victim would get a “bad remark” in his service book. Following the incident, the victim repaired the damage.

The vice-president, CSSU, Nagaland, also said that the union came to know about the “unfortunate incident” only on September 3 through the relatives of the victim.

Meanwhile, Langpong said that the ultimatum for immediate transfer of SP, Tuensang, Amit Nigam, within 24 hours addressed to the DGP, Nagaland, was submitted on Saturday after the silent protest to the Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang.

It was mentioned that the SP’s executions of power contradicted conventional ethics and morality.

Further, Demanding an immediate response to an ultimatum, the CSSU vice-president said that if any untoward incident happens after the failure to remove the SP, the student organisation would not be held responsible.
