In view of ‘upsurge’ in COVID-19 cases in Manipur, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, has decided to deploy a multi-disciplinary Central team to aid the health department of Manipur in their efforts for management of COVID-19.
According to an official source, the development followed a meeting of chief minister N Biren Singh with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his official residence at New Delhi on Wednesday.
The Central team will be composed of three members — Senior regional director of RoHFW, Manipur, Dr L Ashananda (team lead), NCDC deputy director Dr Rameshwar, and consultant microbiologist and nodal officer for Manipur, Dr Smita Singhal. The team shall depart latest by August 5, 2021, according to an office memo.
The team will specifically look at areas of — (i) Testing, including genomic sequencing for SARS CoV-2 variants (ii) Contact tracing, including surveillance, containment operations, (iii) COVID appropriate behaviors, (iv) Availability of hospital beds, sufficient logistics including ambulances, and hospital wise case fatality analysis and (v) COVID-19 vaccination progress.

Meanwhile, Manipur on Wednesday reported 14 more deaths, taking the COVID-19 total fatality to 1,606. A total of 765 new cases were reported, taking the total number of infections to 1,01,390.
The recovery rate has slightly improved to 89.52 per cent, as 1,226 persons were discharged on Wednesday. Out of 9,015 active cases in the state, 3,590 are in home isolation and 2,132 are in community home isolation centres.
