‘Fake Indian currency notes’ of demonetised Rs 1,000 notes worth Rs 4 crore seized

Manipur police on Thursday seized demonetised ‘fake Indian currency notes’ — Rs 1,000, worth around Rs 4 crore from Keirao Khuman Lok and arrested two individuals who were allegedly hiding it. 

According to the police statement, reliable information was received at around 03:00 am on Thursday about the manufacturing of fake Indian currency notes at Keirao Wangkham area. 

Acting on the information at about 04:30 pm, joint police teams of District Police, Thoubal led by SP Jogeshchandra Haobijam, assisted by Addl. SP(OPs) Sachidananda Soibam, OC CDO Thoubal, Insp. N Tikendra Meetei, Jem. Md. Amin Khan and Hav. Th. Kiran Singh of CDO Thoubal, after informing the Control Room of Imphal East District Police, conducted a search operation at Keirao Wangkhem area. 

During the search operation, the team came across a locked hut situated at Keirao Khuman Lok suspected to be hiding some bundles of fake Indian currency notes inside. Therefore, the owner of the hut Chungkham Dewan Singh (50) S/o Ch. Jugindro Singh of Keirao Wangkhem, Ngarian Chingkhong Leikai was identified. On questioning, he disclosed that some manufactured fake Indian currency notes of Rs. 1,000 were hidden inside his hut and he produced the notes by opening the lock of the hut. 

On further questioning, he disclosed that the packing and binding of the notes were done along with one Chingakham Surchandra Singh (40) S/o Ch. Deben Singh of Keirao, Wangkhem, Ngarian Chingkhong Leikai, Imphal East District. They were arrested at 05:00 am and seized the notes at 05:10 am by observing formalities. Further, they disclosed that the notes were brought by one Tony of Keirao along with his nephew Arun of Waithou Thiyam Khunjao and handed over to them.

The arrested persons along with seized items were handed over to OC Irilbung PS for further investigation.
