74th Vanmahotsav observed At Shirui Village, Ukhrul

Over 500 saplings will be planted in the surrounding periphery of Vangayan in 2 km stretch with Pheobe tree, Cherry plant, talhou, cinnamon, pine and flowering shrub Baouganvilia, impatient, rose etc at three point Vangayan slope, Kashung ngapak and Seishim.

44-Ukhrul MLA Ramnganing Muivah on Monday launched the 74th Vanmahotsav celebration at Vangayan Shirui village, Ukhrul.

Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Ukhrul Shangam Shaliwo in his keynote addressed, elaborated about the celebration of the festival of forests under the theme ” Each one, plant one, stop to chop”

The weeklong celebration will include activities of planting sapling of trees in various places of Ukhrul District.

MLA of 44-Ukhrul, Ramnganing Muivah informed that mass tree plantation was carried today at the foothill of Shirui is to rejuvate our spring water sources. He further mentioned that Shirui mountain is among few alpine forest found in Manipur. Ram Muivah stated that, “In the earler days, the river was plenty with different variety of fishes. The forest was full of eatables plants and fruits. Rivers and stream were flowing throughout the year. Today, the river and streams are dried. Fishes are scarce. The use of bleaching powder has destroyed all the organism in the rivers and streams. Let us plant more trees to make our place a favourable and desirable place for every living beings.”

Headman of Shirui, Soyo Wungsek informed that over 200 villagers of the village took part in a plantation drive held at the foothill of Shirui mountain.

The programme was organised by Ukhrul Forest Division in collaboration with Shirui village. The programme was attended by Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Zuringla Kengoo, CEO of ADC-Ukhrul, David Kashungnao, Addl. SP of Ukhrul, Ringthing Hongchui, Executive Engineer of PHED Ukhrul, Themreishang Marei, DGM of MSPDCL Ukhrul, Akui L Shimray and others.
