Worm Attack on Parkia trees: New Tusom Expresses Gratitude

New Tusom is about 86 kilometres away from Ukhrul Headquarters and about 7 kilometres away from Indo-Myanmar border pillar number 129 and 130. New Tusom was recently in the news as thousands of Parkia tree was infested by worms.

Following TFM’s report under the headline “Worms Attack Parkia Tress (Yongchak-Stink Bean) At New Tusom” on August 10, 2022, the Horticulture Department of Ukhrul has visited New Tusom village on August 11, 2022 to take stock of the situation. The team after spot isnpection had request the Director, Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Manipur, for providing Battery Operated Knapsack Sprayer, Rocker Sprayer and Super Killer to fight the worm that has infested the parkia tree.

Accordingly, the requirements were made available to the villagers on Saturday informed Graceson M Vashum, Chairman, Village Development Council (VDC) of New Tusom.

In a press release issued by Village Development Council of New Tusom, the VDC on behalf of the villagers expressed immense gratitude to Letpao Haokip, Minister for Tribal Affairs and Hills and Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Khashim Vashum, Minister for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary and Transport, Additional Director and Team of Horticulture Department, Manipur, District Horticulture and Team, Ukhrul and PS to Minister Khashim Vashum, Reshang A Shatsang for their swift response and concerned for the parkia farners of New Tusom.

“Out of 400 houses, about 200 households are into intensive Parkia farming. The village have planted around 15000 parkia trees and around 10000 trees are being harvested every year resulting to a turnover of Rs. 2 crore per year” informed Chairman of New Tusom VDC.

This year, the parkia farners are worried because of the massive worm infestation. They are worried whether they would be able to harvest like last year.
