Urea in rice distributed to Covid-hit people raises eyebrows

Demanding thorough probe into the issue, Kakching District Task Force said such controversy when people suffering unprecedented hardships due to second wave of COVID-19 pandemic should not be taken lightly

Amid growing hardships for many families who have been undergoing the unprecedented social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic-induced curfew/restriction, distribution of rice mixed with Urea-like fertilizers in 37/26 Kakching Makha Rajdharni areas has come as a shocker to many.

According to a press statement issued by the Kakching District Task Force, Kakching is one of the worst-hit districts of Manpur by the second wave of Covid-19. At least 22 people perished in the district due to coronavirus in the second wave of the pandemic. Out of the present 318 positive cases, many are in critical condition while vaccination drives have been put on hold due to shortage, it said.

Demanding thorough probe into the issue, the task force said amid the critical juncture, controversy over distribution of urea-mixed rice should not be taken lightly. The concerned department must investigate from where and how fertilizers-mixed rice was distributed to pandemic-hit people.

Drawing the attention of the state government, the task force sought assistance to bring solace to suffering people during this frightening wave of Covid-19. It also urged all the officials to execute their duties sincerely to beat the pandemic jointly.
