The Blood Bank Refrigerator at Ukhrul District Hospital has been lying unused for more than four years. According to sources, the machine is yet to be installed and there is no technician or expert to operate it.
The lack of full-fledged blood bank facilities and technical staff came to light on Friday after volunteers from the community came forward and donated blood to a mother who is suffering from second pregnancy with bleeding because of placenta previa.

The pregnant mother was bleeding severely after giving birth. Doctor informed that four units of blood were administered to her the other day but due to excessive bleeding another two units of blood were required for transfusion. The required units of blood were donated by volunteers today at CHSRC.
The situation of running around for blood donors could have been avoided had there been a blood bank in Ukhrul. Any donors, who wish to donate can do so anytime for storage and can be used anytime when it requires. Because of the lack of many important basic facilities — blood bank is one of them– many of the patients are referred to Imphal.
