Student bodies seize, destroy tobacco products worth Rs 1 crore

Activists of six student bodies — All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Apunba Ireipakki Maheiroi Sinpang Lup (AIMS), Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur ( DESAM), Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), Manipuri students’ Federation (MSF), and Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK), on Friday confiscated tobacco products worth around Rs 1 crore and destroyed it in front of media persons.

Around 300 sacks of Talab (gutka), Kheini, Zarda, amongst others were confiscated by the activists when they raided godowns at Mantripukhri at around 1 pm on Friday.

The drive was part of the student bodies’ campaign against tobacco products in the state. Such drives have been conducted earlier as well.

The student bodies also expressed dismay at the effort of some businessmen to earn profit by selling tobacco products amidst the raging second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in the state, and vowed to continue such drive.

In view of the prevailing situations due to the second wave, starting Saturday the student bodies will look into the health Institutes of the state on how the non-COVID patients are treated. They also informed that they are ready to assist the government in fighting the pandemic.

The student bodies also commended the frontline workers including doctors, nurses, medical staff, police personnel, and media persons for their role in fighting the dreaded pandemic.
