Sports science pivotal in bringing about sporting excellence: Prof Subramaniam

A national-level webinar on India in Tokyo Olympics, 2020, was held to cheer and pass the message to the participants of the Tokyo Olympics to perform at their best and make the country proud.

Prof Ramamurthy Subramaniam, Dean (Academics), National Sports University, Imphal, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, has said that sports science is pivotal in bringing about sporting excellence.

He made the remark while giving his presentation as a resource person in a national level webinar on India in Tokyo Olympics, 2020, jointly organised on Wednesday by the Regional Outreach Bureau (ROB), Imphal, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India and Department of Physical Education & Sports Science, Department of Yoga and National Service Scheme(NSS) Cell, Manipur University, Canchipur. 

The Webinar was moderated by A Ibomcha Sharma, Head of Office, ROB, Imphal.

Prof Ramamurthy said, normal people with the support of sports science will become good players, a good player with the support of sports science will become a great player and a great player with the support of sports science become a world champion.

He said, the purpose of the webinar is to cheer and pass the message to the participants of the Tokyo Olympics to perform at their best and make the country proud. He appreciated the sports culture of Manipur and expressed the need to tap the sporting talents and bring it to long term athletic development.

He further said, National Sports University was set up with this very objective to tap talents and bring in scientific approach to enhance the sports performance of the state as well as of the nation. He also said that participation has improved this time and India has high hopes of more medals this time especially in athletics.

Giving a narrative of the contribution of Northeast in Team India for the Tokyo Olympics, B Narayanan, Additional DG (Region), Imphal, ROB & PIB, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt of India, said, our country is sending the biggest-ever contingent this time for the Tokyo Olympics to compete in 69 cumulative events across 18 sports disciplines and eight sportspersons from the eight states of Northeast are in Team India to claim medals and bring in laurels for the country.

He further said, Manipur, the power house of sports in the country, is contributing five sporting talents: MC Mary Kom who will also be a flag bearer of Indian team in this Tokyo Olympics, former Indian women national team captain Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam in Women’s Hockey, S Nilakanta in Men’s Hockey, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu in Weightlifting and Judoka Likmabam Shushlia Devi.

He said, Mizoram’s Lalremsiami, as first female Olympian from the state, will take part in her maiden Olympics sojourn in Tokyo and among the Indian participants in Tokyo Olympics are ace Sikkimese archer Tarundeep Rai, the second Sikkimese Olympian after Jas Lal Pradhan and pride of Assam Lovlina Borgohain in boxing.

He also appealed to all to pray together so that our sporting talents can perform excellently in their respective events in Tokyo Olympics and cheered for India.

M Nodiyachand Singh, Faculty, Dept of Physical Education & Sports Science, HOD, Department of Yoga and NSS Cell Coordinator, Manipur University said, talent search, scientific approach in grooming the budding sportspersons, identification of sporting events suitable to sporting aspirants, giving proper recognition to meritorious sportspersons and providing a livelihood for them will bring in many achievements including medals and it will also pave the way for the country to become a sporting nation.

A total of 179 persons including academicians in sports science, law and other faculties, sportspersons, senior officials of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Govt. of India all over the country participated in the webinar.
