Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday to address critical state issues amid ongoing unrest. The discussion occurred hours before the Manipur Police issued an order withdrawing 17 security personnel previously assigned to Biren Singh.
The directive, signed by the Director General of Police (DGP), mandated the personnel to return to their parent units immediately. A subsequent order confirmed only six security staff—three assistant sub-inspectors, one head constable, and two constables—would remain with the former CM until further notice. This move follows Biren Singh’s resignation on February 9, 2025, and the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13.
Later, after meeting the Governor, Biren Singh held a press conference at his Imphal West residence, outlining his discussions with the Governor. Key topics included the Gwaltabi incident, illegal immigration, and security challenges.
On social media platform X, he wrote: “Called on Governor, Shri Ajay Kumar Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan today. We had a detailed discussion on pressing issues concerning the state, including resolving tensions from the Gwaltabi incident.”
He also highlighted the BJP-led government’s compliance with the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) 30-day directive, detailing measures like biometric registration, verification drives, and deporting undocumented foreigners. Biren Singh stressed the complexity of identifying immigrants due to repeated refugee influxes from Myanmar since 1962, notably after the 2021 military coup. He urged the Governor to seek an extension of the MHA’s deadline, citing the “enormity of the task.”
The Governor reportedly assured swift action on the Gwaltabi issue, including dialogues with agitating groups. Biren Singh further emphasized disarming illegal armed groups to restore peace and secure national highways, which he claimed had been unsafe for valley residents for over two years.
Applauding the MHA’s efforts, the former CM reiterated that identifying and deporting illegal immigrants was vital to safeguarding national security and Manipur’s cultural integrity.
