RTI activist knocked down in hit and run case demands legal actions against culprits

Joykumar alleged that the horrific accident took place on August 24 due to “vested criminal intention and sheer negligence” of the accused driver and his men. He demanded an immediate FIR to be lodged and mete out befitting legal punishments to those involved in the incident

A case of hit and run has emerged in the panic triggering road rage which occurred along Wangkhei-Kongba Road and residential areas of Palace Compound. Eminent RTI Activist, Wahengbam Joykumar, one of the victims in the horrific trail of accidents, has filed a hit and run complaint against Thingbaijam Lanthoi for reportedly fleeing the scene of accident after the former was knocked down along with his 2 wheeler. According to sources, the complaint was filed at Porompat Police Station on September 2.

In his complaint, Joykumar alleged that the horrific accident took place due to vested criminal intention and sheer negligence of the accused driver and his men. He demanded an immediate FIR to be lodged and mete out befitting legal punishments to those involved in the incident. The complaint further mentioned that Joykumar sustained severe injuries during the accident following which he was rushed to the Emergency Unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences for immediate medical attention and is currently under bed rest. As pointed out in his complaint, the reported hit and run took place in front of Wangkhei Model High School around 8:30 PM while he was returning to his residence after running some errands.

It may be mentioned that according to police report, Thingbaijam Lanthoi Singh along with 2 of his associates had caused a long trail of accidents in which 4 vehicles and a house were damaged in their Chevrolet Cruz model car bearing license plate number MN05A 7460. Out of the three who were on the vehicle, two have been identified while the third person is absconding and his identity is yet to be established.
Police report further added that the long trail of accidents kicked off along Wangkhei-Kongba road where the car had an accident with an auto rickshaw near Wangkhei Meihoubam Lampak around 8:10 PM and finally ended its chase at Palace Compound around 9 PM.
2 out of the 5 victims namely 53 year old W. Joykumar and 50 year old Kiramat Ali owner of the auto rickshaw had filed their respective complaints at Porompat Police following the incident. The Police had also lodged an FIR at Porompat Police Station for further legal actions.
