Putting its weight behind the demand for justice for the death of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences’ (RIMS) student Sanaton Athokpam, the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) Manipur unit held a candlelight vigil at Congress Bhawan, BT Road, Imphal on Monday evening.

NSUI also strongly condemned the manner in which the case has been handled so far.

Speaking to media persons, Manipur State NSUI president Md Kabir Ahamad urged Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh to register an FIR and investigate the truth behind the death. The chief minister, who is also the home minister, should reveal the FIR number of the case to the public, he demanded.

Like All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), RIMS is also a Central institute, he said and demanded the Prime Minister and Union Health Minister to act for the justice of Sanaton.

If both the BJP governments, at the centre and the state, do not take the case seriously in a time bound manner, then NSUI will be “compelled” to protest across the nation, he warned. NSUI Manipur will write to Rahul Gandhi on the issue, to be raised in the Parliament, if the case is not investigated at the earliest, he added.

Maintaining that Sanaton was a bright student, Kabir listed the academic performance of the deceased. He held 6th position in class 10th state board exam, 4th position in class 12th exam and 3rd position in MBBS entrance examination for overall Manipur, he added.

“NSUI will forever stand for students and stand with the family members of Sanaton”.

An MBBS student of RIMS, Sanaton of Khurai Thangjam Leikai was allegedly found hanging in his hostel room on March 15. Justice for Sanaton Athokpam (JSA) has been leading the agitations to find out the truth about the death.
