Renowned writer, physician Dr Jodhachandra Sanasam succumbs to COVID-19 complications

Renowned writer and physician Dr Jodhachandra Sanasam passed away on Sunday at RIMS Hospital due to COVID-19 complications. It is learnt that he was a diabetic patient and was tested positive for the deadly virus. But after testing negative some time back he was on observation. 

Known more for his writing and social activities, Dr Jodhachandra Sanasam penned several literary works including novels, short stories, poems, etc. He was born to Sanasam Tomal Singh and Moirangthem ningol Maipakpi Devi on November 20, 1944 at Singjamei Makha, Sanasam Kollup. 

Dr Jodhachandra Sanasam served as the principal at the Nobel Medical College, Nepal. Prior to that, he had a long experience as professor in ENT at three medical colleges of India. 

He was a life member in various organisations of writers, workers in social clubs, musicians and lyricists, and health provider professionals, of which he worked as president and secretary in many areas wherever he has been in, including Apunba Matam Eshei Kanglup (AMMIK), All Manipur Music Association (AMMA), and Patriotic Writer’s Forum, amongst others. 

Dr Jodhachandra also served as the editor-in-chief of the first film magazine of Manipur “Film gi Taibang” and the editor of a magazine “Hakchang gi Paojel”. He contributed critical writing, and was a columnist of Hueiyen Lanpao English issue too. He presented papers in literary and medical seminars on many occasions. 

He is a recipient of awards, appreciations and recognitions in various fields.

He was also an approved lyricist of All India Radio, Imphal. His penned hit singles which remain people’s favourite to this day. For his English translation of Khamba Thoibi Seireng he was honoured with Sahitya Thoupanglup’s Nongthombam Kunjamohan Singh Translation Award 2017. In recognition of his contribution to Manipuri Literature, Dr Jodhachandra Sanasam was honoured with “Sahityabhusan” by Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal on its 83rd annual conference.
