Manipur police on Thursday arrested an active member of the proscribed outfit PREPAK (Pro) and recovered improvised explosive devices concealed inside coconuts, an official statement said on Friday.
The arrested militant has been identified as Nongthombam Abung Meeti aka Nongdamba (20), S/o N. Nandakumar Meetei, of Nongpok Sanjenbam Khullen under the jurisdiction of Lamlai PS.
According to the police, on Thursday a combined team of Commando Imphal-East Unit and 15 Assam Rifles, conducted mobile frisking and checking, cordoned and search operations in different areas of Mantripukhri-Koirengei areas along the NH-39 road. During the operation, the active member PREPAK (Pro) was detained when he was coming from the northern side of Koirengei Bridge at around 3:35 p.m.
The arrested individual told police that he came to Mantripukhri-Koirengei area looking for a place to plant an IED to attack security forces, particularly the Indian Army. On further examination, it was learnt that he had concealed two IEDs at the foothill of Thumbi Ching, Nongpok Sanjenbam which he brought from Moreh in October, 2021, handed over to him by one Ango of PREPAK (Pro) and instructed to plant the IED at Mantripukhri area along the NH 39 road to target and attack the security forces.
Immediately, a combined team of CDO/IE and a column of 15 AR along with the arrestee rushed to the foothill and several items were recovered, including — two RDX (cake) each weighing 150 grams (approx.), two RC receivers (circuit board), two electric detonators, two 9 volt batteries, and one remote control device.
The arrested person along with seized items were handed over to Heingang Police Station for taking up further necessary legal action against him.
