Zeliangrong Cultural Council (ZCC) has urged the Manipur Government to nab the perpetrators of the Pongringlong violent incident and offer compensation to the victims’ families for their losses.

In a release signed by its president Prof M Kamson, ZCC said that on June 17, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) gathered around 100 youths from 12 Rongmei villages of Noney area and attacked Pongringlong village under Kangchup-Geljang sub-division in Kangpokpi district. At least 18 villagers were injured and six houses and six vehicles were set ablaze in the violence, it added.

The tension of Pongringlong village is a 30 years old controversy. But on March 22, 2021, the Rongmei Naga Council, Manipur, formed an eight-member JAC and instigated the violence by standing with the nine families who were banished from Pongringlong, ZCC alleged.

ZCC also asked the state government, police department, and concerned authorities, how many of the 100 youths have been arrested till date. It also demanded action against the 12 Rongmei villages from where the youths were gathered.

The committee also alleged that the youths gathered at Kalong (Tupul) village on June 16 and had a grand feast before attacking Pongringlong village the next day. Accusing the Tupul village of abetting criminal activities, ZCC demanded action against the village.

ZCC further said that the villagers of Pongringlong are unhappy with the response of the police on the day of the incident. There was information that such violence might happen and even CrPC 144 was clamped in the village, it added.

The council also demanded the concerned to settle the 30 years old case of Pongringlong at the earliest.
