Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul District Dr Kapangring Shimray on Thursday made a startling revelation that the oxygen plant inaugurated by chief minister N Biren Singh in Ukhrul on August 9 has not been functional till date. “We have not generated any oxygen from the plant till date,” he said.

Dr Kapangring A Shimray was speaking at a function organized by Assam Rifles for handing over of ventilator machine and four stretchers to Chief Medical Officer of Ukhrul District.

While thanking the Headquarters 10 Sector Assam Rifles, Dr. Kapangring A Shimray stated that “it is a privilege that we always received help from the Assam Rifles of Ukhrul.”

“Earlier, the District Hospital has also received a ventilator machine from the Assam Rifles, which has been very helpful to us. Right now also, we will say it will be very helpful because the oxygen plant even though it is installed, it has not been functional. We have not generated any oxygen from the plant till date,” he added.

The chief medical officer further said, “So ventilator is the main source for us. To get oxygen from Imphal, our Medical Superintendent always had a hard time arranging oxygen every now and then. So when there is electricity, we use this ventilator machine as our lifeline.”

“The second option is that we disseminate even to our PHCs and CHCs. When we have more ventilator machines in the headquarters, we can share them too. AL the PHCs and CHCs are provided with two ventilator machines each so that they can take care of the Covid-19 patients in their respective PHC and CHC,” said Dr. Kapangring A Shimray

He also expressed happiness that “the curve has come down which is a big relief for the health workers.”

DIG of 10 Sector, Assam Rifles Brigadier Ravi Yadav handed over the ventilator machine and four stretchers to Ukhrul CMO Dr Kapangring Shimray and Medical Superintendent of Ukhrul District Hospital Dr Reisangmi Raikhan in the presence of Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, Joseph Pauline Kamsom and Additional DIG, Colonel Dipankar Basu.

Brigadier Ravi Yadav stated that “What I would like to say is that Covid has taught us that together we can win, covid has also taught us that all of us are equal because this disease did not differentiate between the rich and the poor. It did not differentiate between people from north and from south. It did not differentiate between people from different backgrounds.”

So, Covid has brought us together and thus, as humanity. It has taught us some important lessons that in the times of need, we need to help each other out and since, we are as Tangkhul as anybody else is, and we are as much from Ukhrul as anybody else is because we are more or less permanent here, he added.

The Brigadier also said that they felt obligated to extend whatever assistance they can and help out the people of Ukhrul so that they can battle this effectively together. “That is one. I would also like to place on record my immense gratitude to DC Joseph Pauline Kamsom that every time we encountered a problem, and also the CMO, that during this crisis, every time we come across a challenging situation where we need testing kits or we need space for quarantine centres, the entire team of the district administration as well as the medical fraternity has been extremely helpful,” he added.

Brigadier Ravi further said, “We all acted together as a team. So, I will be perpetually grateful for that and the Assam Rifles owes a great depth of gratitude to the entire staff of the medical fraternity as well as to the District Administration. And together we can win and together we will win.”

Commanding Officer of 27 Assam Rifles, Colonel Rippon Bora stated that the Assam Rifles have a robust and friendly relationship with the District Administration and Health Authority of Ukhrul District. “The relationship gets stronger during Covid-19 pandemics. Assam Rifles managed to control the Covid-19 because of good response from the District Administration and Health Department. We are under control now,” he said.
