One more dies of Covid in Kangpokpi

Amid surging covid cases, Kangpokpi district is facing shortage of resources, infrastructure, equipment, including oxygen cylinder and manpower to cater to thousands population

Kangpokpi district witnessed another COVID fatality on Saturday as a man from T. Khullen village succumbed to the coronavirus infection at COVID Care Centre at Leikop in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Raisong Sonba of Lungtaimai Colony, T.Khullen village. He was taken to Peace Hospital & Research Institute, Porompat Imphal on May 13 with fever, cough and shortness of breath, where he was tested positive for COVID-19. The patient was admitted to COVID Care Centre, Leikop in Kangpokpi district around 5.30 pm due to non-availability of bed in Imphal. He breathed his last around 4.30 am.

The 60-year-old deceased was a co-morbid patient having heart disease. He was later buried at T.Khullen village cemetery following strict protocols.

With one more dead, the district fatality stands at 22.

Meanwhile, the infection of COVID-19 in the district continued to surge with report of eight new cases in the district taking to total positive cases to 87 after five patients have been cured and discharged. At present, there are nine patients admitted at COVID Care Centre, Leikop.

Amidst the alarming surge of infection and fatality, Kangpokpi district has been facing shortage of resources, infrastructure, equipment, including oxygen cylinder and manpower to cater to thousands population.

According to the District Hospital source, there are only 28 oxygen cylinders comprising 16 D-type and 12 B-type and two oxygen Concentrator and two ventilators.

Out of the 28 oxygen cylinders five D-type and four B-type oxygen cylinders are filled as of now while the only two available ventilators are also not working properly.

Considering the alarming surge of infection, present oxygen cylinders will be insufficient to meet the demand.

Apart from shortage of oxygen and ventilators, COVID Care Centre is facing acute shortage of doctors and nurses.

Recently, two doctors were reportedly recruited as per Government direction. Till then, Medical Officer from various health centres in the district were assigned duty on roaster basis and they managed the COVID Care Centre till date. One post of anesthesia and medicine specialist has been lying vacant in the district hospital.
