National General Strike partially hits normal life in Manipur

The first day of two-day National General Strike passed off peacefully in Manipur without any violent incident. The two-day National General Strike “Save The People and Save The Nation” was called by Joint Platform of the Central Trade Unions (CTUs). Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions Manipur, a conglomerate of Central and State level trade unions including AITUC, CITU, INTUC, TUCC, UTUC, Independent trade unions of BSNL, Bank, LIC, Post, AG and state government employees enforced the general strike in the state.

The general strike partially affected the normal life as the day 1 witnessed total general strike in banks, BSNL, LIC, Post Offices, where sit in demonstrations and protest meetings were held in their respective office premises.

The AIBEA, BEFI, AIBOA jointly organised the sit-in demonstrations in banks and other unions in their respective office campuses. The state government offices witnessed thin attendance as the strongest state government employees’ federation Manipur Government Employees Federation, an affiliated body to the AISGEF, said a statement issued by Kshetrimayum Santa, the Convenor of Co-ordinating Body of Trade Unions, Manipur.

Santa said the scheme workers viz. ASHA, Anganwadi, Midday Meal Workers, NRM and other scheme workers also participated in the general strike. The unorganised sector workers, including construction workers and rural workers with local peasants participated in the general strike, he added.

The leadership of the AITUC , CITU, HMS, INTUC , TUCC , UTUC and independent trade unions jointly organised a protest rally in the heart of Imphal , the capital city of Manipur.
