As per the decision taken by the executive council of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC) and its frontal organization on December 28, 2021, at Shamator, the first phase of agitation was held on Monday within the “Yimkhiung land” to show resentment against the Nagaland government in failing to declare Shamator sub-division into a full-fledged district by December 31, 2021.

The YTC had on Sunday last through a notification issued by its vice-president, R Kiuji, and general secretary, S Tsuyihba, informed about the first phase of agitation in all the Yimkhiung inhabitant administrative headquarters by closing down government offices and shutting down business establishments from 9 am to 12 noon.

According to a statement issued by YTC Media Cell, the first phase of agitation started on Monday in all the administrative headquarters within the Yimkhiung land in protest against the Nagaland government’s failure to declare “Shamator district” by December 31, 2021.

It stated that the demand for district up-gradation began in 2003 and since the several representation and reminder letters were submitted to the State government by YTC, the State government had also assured YTC to fulfil the long aspirations of Yimkhiung people in lieu of “unopposed NDPP MLA” in the last by-election of 58 Shamator-Chessore A/C held in October last.

However, YTC said that the State government has been procrastinating citing varied reason in declaring Shamator as a district.

In Pungro town, various organizations responded to the call of YTC where government offices except the district administration, banks, PHED, medical, police, power, and para-military were exempted.

All business establishments also joined in the protest by shuttering down to show solidarity and support to YTC on the first day of the first phase of agitation.
