All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Tuesday presented its findings on an investigation by a team constituted by the student body regarding the death of MBBS student of RIMS, Sanaton Athokpam.

Addressing the media at the AMSU Headquarters, DMU Campus, Imphal, AMSU vice president Laishram Athouba Meitei stated that the student body constituted a team on March 16, the day after the death of Sanaton, to investigate the death.

According to Athouba, the door of the hostel room of Sanaton was found intact, as opposed to reports that some students forced their way in after Sanaton failed to reply. It was also alleged that the rope with which Sanaton allegedly hanged was found snapped. But till date that rope has not been produced by the authority or police, he said urging the police to make it public.

He also said that there was no proper record in the Casualty ward of RIMS where Sanaton was brought. There is suspicion that the record might have been manipulated through collusion, he added.

“Why have the students who allegedly brought Sanaton to the hospital from his hostel not been interrogated by the police,” he asked.

It is highly auspicious that the bluetooth headset, which was around Sanaton’s neck when he died, was still connected to a mobile phone which was shown to the family by the Lamphel Police Station OC, he added.

The dean (Academics) of RIMS should explain to the public why he has forbidden the students of RIMS to speak to anyone about the death of Sanaton, he demanded.

“It is AMSU’s demand that the hostel warden and dean (Academics) should be suspended and interrogated,” he asserted.

The authority should explain why the enquiry is being conducted with a focus on the family members only and not others like the students who brought Sanaton to the hospital, he further demanded.

Athouba also demanded to know the “hidden agenda” of the flip-flop of the police regarding the call history on Sanaton’s mobile phone and his tablet. Initially it was reported that there was no call history but some days later it was reported that the call history was there. In the same way, it was told that the tablet was not found inside Sanaton’s hostel room. But some days later it was reported that the tablet was found in his bed, he said.

According to AMSU’s investigation there was no record of RIMS authority lodging a complaint to the police regarding the death. The RIMS authority should explain why they have not made such a complaint when one of its students was found dead in their hostel, he demanded.

The AMSU vice president also urged the state government to solve the case before its term ends. He further asserted that AMSU will continue to investigate the case and is prepared to launch intense agitation to find out the truth behind the death.
