Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe — a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge, but not by a retired judge — into the killing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh on October 3.

Speaking to media persons, MPCC spokesperson Nigombam Bhupenda Meitei said that the BJP government in Manipur forcibly and illegally halted the peaceful democratic protest held on Tuesday in Imphal by senior Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Bhakta Charan Das and MPCC president with MLAs and former MLAs the BJP government in Manipur has not allowed Congress leaders to hold a democratic protest in support of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, he added.

Nigombam Bhupenda Meitei maintained that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Lucknow for Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav on Tuesday, has deliberately remained a stoic silence towards the victim families of Lakhimpur Kheri. The prime minister should reply whether freedom (Azadi) of farmers of Lakhimpur Kheri has no constitutional protection in our nation when farmers gave freedom to us.

The killing of farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh and the silence of BJP governments, both under Prime Minister Modi and UP chief minister Yogi, are the true reflection of the highest level of arrogance of BJP and its idea against the farmers and the people of our country, he asserted.

“The BJP government, under Prime Minister Modi, has been, systematically, trying to destroy the land acquisition law and making serious attempts to bring the anti-farmers three farm bills. What BJP does in the centre or Lucknow, the same attitude is being imbibed and executed by the same idea of BJP in Manipur too by imposing illegal restrictions against peaceful democratic protests in Imphal,” he added.

The MPCC spokesperson also said that the complete lawlessness in Uttar Pradesh, where fundamental rights have been violated by the state government under the silent spectator of the central government, befits the imposition of President’s rule in the state.

Nigombam Bhupenda Meitei further said that the Congress party strongly protested against the illegal detention of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh for more than 48 hours since 4:30 am on the October 4, 2021 without being served with any order or notice or FIR under BJP’s regime in the state. She was on her way to visit the families of the deceased farmers.

Why is the son of the union minister of state for home affairs not being arrested till now while Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has been kept illegally for more than 48 hours, he asked.

AICC Research Department general secretary Leni Jadhav, former MLA Salam Joy, NSUI president Kabir Ahamad, also participated in the press conference.
