Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has accused the N Biren Singh led state government of suppressing the freedom of expression and stifling the voice of the opposition using state machinery. The party has alleged that there is “no democracy in Manipur” as the state reels under “dictatorship”.

MPCC senior spokesperson Ningombam Bupenda Meitei while addressing the media on Saturday said that the Congress party and the people of Manipur will “fight to restore the freedom of speech and expression and freedom of movement in Manipur, and we will unitedly fight for democracy and save our people and our state from being converted into a regime of dictatorship”.

The MPCC senior spokesperson pointed out that “senior editor, university and college professors, journalists, bloggers, many young people and common citizens were pulled up by the state police under BJP regime, and some of them were slapped with NSA (National Security Act)”.

War against Drugs is going on, but there appears to be an absence of War against Drug Lords in Manipur under the BJP regime, said the Congress spokesperson.

Ningombam Bupenda Meitei said that in the recent Pallel Drugs case, huge contraband drugs worth crores of rupees were nabbed from the police by the state police, and “therefore for the Home Department to investigate into the matter that involved the police would tantamount to an absence of fair investigation to unearth the real owner or owners of the contraband drugs. For this, in order to bring justice to the investigation, an independent body, which is CBI, is required for fair investigation. Therefore, Congress demanded for CBI Inquiry into the matter”.

After the Congress’ demand for CBI into the drugs case, an FIR was registered against the MPCC president and MLA K Meghachandra and ex-INC candidate of Kakching Assembly Constituency Ksh Kennedy said Ningombam Bupenda Meitei.

He said that the registration of FIR against the state Congress President who is also an MLA, is “a clear indication of scuttling freedom of speech and expression and freedom of movement under the BJP regime in Manipur”.

“This act of the present state government in the state shows that the incumbent chief minister is the weakest chief minister in the history of Manipur, for scuttling the voice of the opposition in democracy by using state machinery”, said the senior MPCC spokesperson.

He assured that the Congress and the people of Manipur will fight to restore the freedom of speech and expression and freedom of movement in Manipur. “We will unitedly fight for democracy and save our people and our state from being converted into a regime of dictatorship”, said Ningombam Bupenda Meitei.
