Kangleipak Kanba Lup (KKL) on Friday urged the Manipur Government to convene an emergency meeting to solve the row of restrictions imposed by an organisation to all the entry points to Mount Koubru. It also demanded for legal actions for fanning communal tensions in the state.
KKL, in a release said that “targeting” of a particular community by some CSOs is unfortunate and KKL does not take it lightly.
Underscoring that the Meitei community, although spread across the globe, has not run into any sort of trouble since it does not encroach on other communities.
KKL also stressed on the sacredness of Mount Koubru stating that it has been a sacred place since time immemorial. How another community can claim it as their ancestral land, it asked.
Stating that there have been several instances of “provocation” by desecrating other sacred places, KKL warned not to repeat it.
The Committee on Protection and Preservation of Mount Koubru (COPPK) on April 11 had announced “immediate closure” of all entry points to Koubru against the continuing of the survey works by the Manipur Government, despite its objection.
The decision was taken in a meeting held at Saitu Village, Saitu Gamphazol Sub Division, participated by members of Sadar Hills Chiefs’ Association, Kuki Inpi and other civil bodies of Kangpokpi district.
Consequently, several CSOs voiced their objections and condemnation of the decision. They have appealed to the COPPK to reconsider it and let sense prevail. The CSOs also appealed for calm and urged the government to solve the situation before it gets out of hand.
Facing backlash, the COPPK on April 14 clarified that it did not mention restrictions on pilgrims with religious purposes. The restriction was imposed only to the survey team and any agency or department accompanying the survey team for security purposes or whatsoever, it added.
