Maintaining that the state government should discontinue its “War on Drugs” campaign if the drug cartels are to be let off, CADA warned the state government to punish the drug smugglers as per the law or face intense movement to save future generations.

The Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) lauded the combined team of Moreh police and 43 Assam Rifles who seized contraband drugs — Methamphetamine and Heroin no. 4 — worth Rs 500 (in international market) at border town Moreh on December 6. But, this warrants no celebration as the drug-kingpin involved might walk away scot-free as evident by past instances, CADA lamented.

CADA, in a release, although contraband drugs worth crores are being often seized along the Imphal-Moreh highway, the unfortunate part is that the culprits are often let off due to loopholes in judiciary or due to the nexus between the smugglers and those in power.

The Phoudel drug case, in which contraband drugs worth Rs 400 crore were seized from a Myanmar citizen, Kyaw Kyaw Naing in 2019, and the seizure of drugs worth 27 crore from the official residence of former Chandel ADC chairman Lhukhosei Zou in 2018, and releasing of the main accused on bail afterwards, seem to indicate that these cases have slipped into abyss, CADA lamented.

Stating that letting the drug kingpins scot free has turned Manipur into a safe haven for drugs related businesses, CADA said that the recent seizure of huge amounts of drugs at Moreh warrants no celebration.

CADA further said that the Manipur government and Union Home Ministry know that huge quantities of contraband drugs are being transported along the Imphal-Moreh road taking advantage of the porous border. It is pertinent to ask the Central and State governments as to the hidden agenda for letting such activities prevail freely, it added.
