Manipur Under Water: Over 19,800 Battle Floods as Rivers Swell; Relief, Rescue Operations Race Against Time

0

Manipur floods continue to be on critical edge. The crisis has also hit healthcare facilities as floodwaters entered ground-floor wards at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), forcing patient evacuations to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and other district hospitals.

TFM Report

Vast areas of Manipur are submerged after consecutive days of relentless rainfall, impacting over 19,800 people as on June 2, the Relief and Disaster Management Department confirmed today. While the deluge has caused significant damage, authorities report no fatalities or missing persons as on Tuesday.

Widespread Inundation as Rivers Breach Banks
Major rivers across the state, including the Imphal and Iril rivers, have overflowed, breaching banks at multiple points and inundating surrounding areas. Although the Manipur River has slightly receded to warning level, most rivers remain dangerously above the high flood mark.

Toll on Homes, Land, and Infrastructure

The flooding has taken a heavy toll:
* 3,365 houses have sustained damage.
* 1,599 individuals have been evacuated to safety.
* 11.8 hectares of precious agricultural land lie destroyed.
* Landslides have been reported at 47 locations statewide.

Relief Efforts Mobilized Amid Receding Rain
The state government has swiftly opened 37 relief camps to shelter displaced residents. A slight reprieve comes as the Water Resources Department notes declining rainfall in catchment areas; Kangpokpi recorded only 11.50 mm as of 1 p.m. Monday.

Imphal on Edge, Critical Infrastructure Hit
The situation remains critical in the capital, Imphal, where ongoing river breaches pose persistent threats. Emergency repair works are underway to restore damaged banks and prevent further flooding. The crisis reached healthcare facilities as floodwaters entered ground-floor wards at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), forcing patient evacuations to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and other district hospitals.

Student Plight Highlights Secondary Crisis
Compounding the emergency, students residing in JNIMS hostels – many from outside Manipur – face severe hardship. The closure of the hostel canteen has left them struggling without access to proper meals and safe drinking water.

Multi-Agency Rescue Operation in Full Swing
Rescue and relief efforts are being vigorously carried out by coordinated teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), state police, army personnel, and local volunteers. Radha Krishan, Commanding Officer of Assam Rifles (CO-33), emphasized the collaborative approach: “Personnel from Assam Rifles, SDRF, NDRF, and relevant state departments are working with a clear roadmap to tackle any emergency that may arise.” He confirmed these joint efforts will continue intensively in the coming days.

Residents Urged to Stay Alert
As recovery operations progress across Manipur, authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and strictly follow all official advisories.
