Amidst tall claims by the Manipur government that law and order situation in the state has improved since the present BJP led state government came to power in 2917, it emerged that the highest number of people — civilians, security force personnel and insurgents — were killed in insurgency related incidents in Manipur amongst the Northeastern states during last five years and present year till November 15.

While 167 people were killed in the state during the period, 153 were killed in Assam. 69 individuals were killed in Arunachal Pradesh in insurgency related incidents, 40 in Meghalaya, 29 in Nagaland, three in Tripura and none were killed in Mizoram during the period.

The information was provided by the minister of state for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

But, overall the number of insurgency related incidents in the seven Northeastern states has improved from 824 in 2014 to 187 in 2021, till November 15, as per the data provided by the minister of state.

No separate fund is allocated for military operations in the Northeastern region. However, the Central government is reimbursing the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) to the Northeastern states, the minister added in the written reply.
