ECI rescheduled the dates after considering inputs, representations, past precedent, logistics, ground situations and all facts and circumstances related to poll dates.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has rescheduled the dates of the Manipur Assembly Election 2022. According to the new schedule, voting for the first phase will be held on February 28, and the second phase is on March 5, 2022.
Earlier, the ECI had announced the schedule for general election to the Legislative Assembly of Manipur as – first phase on February 27 and second phase on March 3, 2022, respectively.
The rescheduling of the voting dates followed the recent visit of an ECI team to Manipur on February 7 and 8. During the visit, the ECI reviewed election preparedness and held interaction with political parties, chief secretary, director-general of police and other state-level officers, chief electoral officer, district election officers and superintendents of police, director general Assam Rifles and other law enforcement agencies and other relevant stakeholders.
According to an ECI statement, various issues and ground situations were presented to the commission during the visit. After considering the inputs, representations, past precedent, logistics, ground situations and all facts and circumstances related to poll dates, the commission decided to reschedule the dates under Section 153 of Representation of the People Act, 1951.
It may be recalled that various civil society organisations and Church bodies in Manipur had demanded and sought the intervention of ECI on rescheduling the poll dates as the first phase of voting was fixed on a Sunday.
