Manipur girds up loins for COVID-19 inoculation drive

The 54,000 doses of Covishield the state received have been transported to ten vaccination sites: JNIMS, RIMS, Shija hospital, district hospitals of Thoubal, Chandel, Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Bishnupur. All the preparations will be completed by Friday, and the “world’s largest COVID vaccination” programme will commence from Saturday (January 16), said official.

Manipur additional chief secretary Paulunthang Vaiphei on Thursday said that the COVID vaccine the state received on Wednesday was Covishield, developed by the Oxford University and pharma major AstraZeneca and manufactured by the Serum Institute of India, Pune. It is fortunate for the state to receive the vaccine which is preferred by most of the health professionals, he added.

Speaking at a media briefing, Vaiphei informed that the 54,000 doses of Covishield the state received on Wednesday have been transported to ten vaccination sites: JNIMS, RIMS, Shija hospital, district hospitals of Thoubal, Chandel, Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong, Churachandpur and Bishnupur. All the preparations will be completed by Friday, and the “world’s largest COVID vaccination” programme will commence from Saturday (January 16), he added.

He also informed that around 3700 individuals will be vaccinated at RIMS, around 1800 at JNIMS, around 1200 at Shija hospital, and around 200 to 470 individuals will be vaccinated at the district hospitals. While 100 persons will be vaccinated per day at the vaccination sites, 200 individuals will be vaccinated at RIMS, he added.

The additional chief secretary further said that after a gap of 28 days the second dose will be administered, which will be done with the same (Covishield) vaccine. He also appealed to those who are going to be vaccinated to maintain COVID appropriate behaviours even 14 days after receiving the second dose.

While the first phase of vaccination is for the health workers presently stationed in the state, the frontline workers are next in line. Individuals above 50 years of age will be vaccinated in the third phase and those with comorbid conditions below 50 years of age will be vaccinated in the fourth phase, he added.

Director FW Dr Shyamsundar, state immunization officer Dr Nandakishor and mission director NHM Dr Shyamjai also attended the media briefing.
