Nongthombam Biren Singh, the Chief Minister of Manipur, formally submitted his resignation to the state’s Governor on Monday. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and urged the Government of India to persist with critical initiatives aimed at safeguarding Manipur’s interests.

Singh, who did not specify reasons for stepping down, emphasized the “honour” of serving the people of Manipur. He lauded the Central government’s “timely actions and interventions” in developmental projects and security measures, appealing for their continuation through the Governor’s office.

Key priorities highlighted in his letter include:

  1. Preserving Manipur’s territorial integrity, rooted in its millennia-old diverse civilizational history.
  2. Combatting border infiltration through stricter policies and deportation of illegal immigrants.
  3. Intensifying the fight against drug trafficking and narco-terrorism.
  4. Enforcing biometric-based mechanisms under the revised Free Movement Regime (FMR) to secure border areas.
  5. Expediting time-bound border infrastructure projects currently underway.

“My sincere request to the Central government through your good office is to continue with the same,” Singh wrote, underscoring the need for sustained efforts to protect the state’s socio-political fabric.

The resignation comes amid ongoing challenges in Manipur, including ethnic tensions and cross-border security concerns. While the Governor’s office was yet to issue an official response at the time of filing this story, political observers anticipate swift procedural steps to appoint an interim leadership.

Singh, a prominent figure in Manipur politics, has previously championed anti-drug campaigns and border security reforms. As Manipur awaits further developments, stakeholders are keenly watching how the Central government addresses Singh’s appeals and navigates the transition phase.
