After authorities paid no heed to their demand for roll back of admission fee hike, Imphal College students’ union on Friday announced a total shutdown inside campus and decided to boycott recruitment examinations being conducted in the college.
Addressing a press conference at Imphal College in Kwakeithel, Imphal College Students’ Union general secretary Oinam Premdas said that when people are suffering many hardships due to covid pandemic, the increase of admission fee is a huge blow to the student community. Demanding the roll back of the hike, the student unions of 12 colleges have been protesting by locking administration blocks and main gates of colleges to stop the admission process. However, the authorities are not fulfilling the demand, he added, lamenting the indifferent attitude of the government to the students’ issue.
Declaring a total shutdown in campus, the students’ union said that it will boycott the Department of Consumer Affairs Food & Public Distribution’s recruitment examination centre in Imphal College on September 19.
The Manipur government and departments concerned should own the responsibility of any untoward incident that occurred when it tried to conduct the examination during the shutdown, it warned.
The students’ union alleged that an additional “fees to be deposited to Government account” has been introduced this year. Though sports fee and cultural fee deposited to Manipur University are lying unutilized, admission fee has been increased this year amid this covid pandemic, it said.
