Biren congratulates 2021 Padma Shri Awardee Rewben Mashangva, Hanjabam Radhe Devi

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday congratulated Manipur’s tribal folk musician and singer Rewben Mashangva and Potloi designer Hanjabam Radhe Devi who had been conferred Padma Shri Awards for their renowned contribution in the world of arts.

Biren, in a message, said that Manipur, although a small state, is known for its rich culture. Its cultural expressions give the State a distinct identity. Rewben Mashangva had been playing an important role in reviving musical tradition of the Tangkhul Naga of Manipur, using traditional musical instruments in his songs and had devoted his entire life to the development of folk music of the Nagas. Radhe Devi had worked as a traditional bridal wear designer and as Potloi Setpi for the last 58 years and had dressed over 1,000 brides during her lifetime. She had also played a major role in showcasing the potloi with her intricate designs, it added.

Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country, are conferred in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/ fields of activities – art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.

“Padma Vibhushan” is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; “Padma Bhushan” for distinguished service of high order and “Padma Shri” for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year.

These awards are conferred by the President of India at ceremonial functions which are held at Rashtrapati Bhawan usually around March/ April every year. This year the President has approved conferment of 119 Padma Awards including 1 duo case (in a duo case, the Award is counted as one). The list comprises 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awards. 29 of the awardees are women and the list also includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRI/PIO/OCI, 16 Posthumous awardees and 1 transgender awardee.
