Athuan Abonmai Assassination: 14 cops suspended, inquiry committee instituted

Athuan Abonmai was abducted by suspected cadres of NSCN (I-M) from the gate of the ground where the state government’s outreach programme “Go to Hills 2.0” was held. He was shoved into an SUV right in front of the security personnel stationed there.

As pressure mounted on the deafening silence of the Manipur government over the abduction and assassination of the former president of Zeliangrong Baudi, Athuan Abonmai, as many as 14 police personnel were suspended on Thursday. 

The suspension orders were issued late Thursday night. The suspended police personnel included the officer-in-charge of Tamenglong police, Manipur Rifles jawans and a police commando. A VDF personnel has also been disengaged from his service. They were suspended due to their “negligence of duty” during the visit of chief minister N Biren Singh at Tamenglong HQ on September 22, 2021.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee has been instituted to inquire into the incident leading to the abduction and subsequent assassination of Athuan Abonmai. The committee will also inquire into whether there were lapses in the security arrangements, fix responsibilities and suggest measures to prevent any such incident in the future, stated an order issued by DGP, Manipur, LM Khaute. The committee will be headed by IG of Police (Int), Manipur, K Radhashyam Singh.

Athuan Abonmai was abducted by suspected NSCN (I-M) cadres from the gate of the ground where the state government’s outreach programme “Go to Hills 2.0” was held. He was shoved into an SUV right in front of the security personnel stationed there. 

Soon after the abduction, his son Arai Abonmai filed an FIR at Lamphel police station where he alleged that his father Thuan Abonmai was abducted by NSCN (I-M) cadres from Pologround  in Tamenglong headquarters around 11.30am.

“As there is apprehension that my father may be harmed, I prayed that immediate measures be taken up to rescue my father,” he wrote to police seeking prompt action.

The body of Athaun Abonmai was found near Pallong in Tamenglong district on Wednesday evening.
