Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) vice president Ningthoujam Doren on Thursday asserted that the arrest of its activist, Sintha Laishram who has been democratically agitating demanding to punish drug smugglers, on wrong charges, won’t be able to suppress the movement.

Doren was speaking at a sit-in at Ningthoukhong Ubak Keithel, Bishnupur district. It was jointly organised by Ubak Keithel Apunba Lup, Apunba Nupi Lup (ANUL), Bishnupur and CADA, according to a CADA release.

Doren further said that by letting drug smugglers scot-free after arresting them, the government is encouraging them. What is the meaning of the government’s silence on the Phoudel drug case where drugs worth Rs 400 crore were seized and the accused were acquitted, he asked. Such instances raised suspicion whether the government is trying to covertly empower them, he asserted.

CADA Thoubal District Committee general secretary Sintha Laishram was arrested on Wednesday from his home by a team of Thoubal Police Commando. He was arrested for allegedly sharing photographs of a sit-in held at Heirok Part II which had placards urging the chief minister to step down.
