All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) and Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) on Friday demanded to fill up the posts of secretary and controller of the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BOSEM) in view of the crucial roles the two posts will be playing in view of the prevailing situations due to COVID-19.

AMSU, in a release, said that the fate of the students appearing for the Class X and Class XII examinations is already hanging in balance due to COVID-19. But without a secretary and controller, the situation has been made worse, it added.

For private schools, the situation might be a bit better since regular e-classes have been conducting during the pandemic. But for those studying in government run schools, their fate in these exams remains bleak, AMSU lamented.

The student body also urged the government to make special arrangements for the students who have not had the luxury of e-classes at the earliest. It also warned the private schools who have been allegedly collecting extra fees for exams’ preparation and also those who are allegedly forcing students to stay in boarding. They should stop this kind of practice immediately, AMSU asserted.

On the other hand, DESAM, in a separate release, demanded that the posts of secretary and controller of BOSEM should be filled up within five days.

Stating that 19 states of India have already partially opened their schools, DESAM said that the roles of the two posts are crucial at this juncture. Since the education minister has recently announced that schools will be opened soon in view of the decrease in the COVID-19 cases, the syllabus has to be revised and the preparations for exams have to be initiated at the earliest, it added.

DESAM also demanded a regular and proper chairman of BOSEM which at the present the director of Education (S) is being made in-charge. Since the role of the director in implementation of NEP is important, a competent officer should be appointed as chairman at the earliest, it added.
