Abonmai Killing: JAC announces highway blockade from Sept 27

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against the Brutal Murder of Shri Athuan Abonmai on Saturday announced 48 hours road Blockade on National Highways 29 and 37 from September 27 midnight till 29 midnight. 

The JAC during a meeting held on Saturday at the premises of Grace Academy School, Tarung, Imphal West District, Manipur attended by various civil societies organizations of Zeliangrong community unanimously agreed to serve 48 hours ultimatum w.e.f. Saturday to the state government to translate into action regarding the charter of demands mentioned in the memorandum which was submitted on September 23, 2021. 

The JAC also demanded to replace the inquiry committee chairman K Radhashyam Singh, IG (Intelligence) whose negligence, inefficiency and ineffectiveness had created security lapses which has led to the abduction and subsequently killing of Athuan Abonmai, former President, Zeliangrong Baudi (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) on September 22, 2021 at Lowerground, Tamenglong District HQ, Manipur during the state government sponsored and organized official programme “Go to Hills 2.0” where the chief minister had grace the programme as the chief and attended by his cabinet colleagues and top ranking government officials. Therefore, such an officer with doubtful character heading the inquiry committee may not bring the desired result, it added. 

It further demanded to translate all the assurances made by the chief minister during a press conference held on September 24, 2021 into visible action. Different forms of democratic agitations will be launched from Sunday, it added. 

The memorandum submitted to the chief minister on September 23, the JAC had demanded to order for a high-level National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry on the conspiracy of abduction, torture and subsequent murdered of Athuan Abonmai under IPC 302, 364. 

It also demanded immediate suspension of the DC and SP of Tamenglong District because the abduction happened in broad daylight in front of the security personnels deployed at the government function. 

The JAC had also maintained that they will withhold the funeral of Athuan Abonmai until the culprits are arrested and justice provided to the victim and his family and the values he stood for. Appropriate compensation to the next kin of Athuan Abonmai was also demanded. 

The JAC had set an ultimatum till September 24, midnight, failing which the JAC in collaboration with like-minded civil society organisations will demonstrate different forms of protest until justice is delivered. During this democratic process initiated by the JAC, the government of India and Manipur will be held accountable for any untoward incident that may arise against the JAC and the public, it had added.
