MLA Yitachu in a letter addressed to the Pochury Hoho, has said since Meluri sub-division deserves to be a “full-fledged” district in all respects, it was also an appropriate time to pursue the matter with the Government of Nagaland with all seriousness.
In this regard, the MLA has convened a consultative meeting on January 20, 1 PM, at his official residence, located at Billy Graham Road, Kohima, with seven apex Pochury bodies.
The apex bodies included Pochury Hoho, Pochury Gazetted Officers’ Forum, Pochury Kajipa Union, Pochury Mothers’ Association, Pochury GB Union, Pochury Students’ Union, and the Pochury Youth Organization.
It was also informed that the purpose of the meet is to chalk out “detailed plan” of action to pursue the matter in a “democratic manner” for declaration of Meluri sub-division to a full-fledged district.
The sitting MLA representing the 20 Assembly Constituency further requested the apex bodies to attend the meeting with views and suggestions.
Wednesday’s declaration in creating the new district also came after a MoU between the Government of Nagaland (GoN), Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC), Tikhir Tribal Council (TTC), and representatives from the Nagaland Government led by Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, in Kohima.
In the MoU, it was mentioned that “no coercive measure shall be adopted by any of the councils and to ensure retention or reversion of any member of Tikhir community or vice versa”.
The MoU also stated that stated that every member of Tikhir or Yimkhiung communities wherever they are, shall have the freedom to choose the community to which “he or she” belongs.
Furthermore, the subject of any “issue or dispute” between the members of the “two brother tribes” should be “localised” and “resolved” through customary laws, practice and that status-quo be maintained.
