Taking strong exception to a remark made by chief minister N Biren Singh, who reportedly “promised peace in return for votes”, Congress leader Bhakta Charan Das asserted that the chief minister should amend his words as it does not suit CM Biren preaching about peace.
Speaking to media persons at Congress Bhawan on Friday, AICC Manipur in-charge Bhakta Charan Das maintained that the remark made by CM Biren was highly objectionable and unconstitutional.
“Give us votes, we will give you peace,” CM Biren had reportedly said during a political conference recently. If the people do not vote for BJP, does it mean that they are going to have unrest and not peace, he asked, adding that it was an indirect threat to the people of the state.
Bhakta Charan Das maintained that it was an unacceptable remark made by CM Biren after serving as chief minister for the last around five years.
CM Biren cannot take the people for granted and utter whatever he wants since he is holding a responsible post, said the AICC Manipur in-charge.
“At least he should respect the position he is holding,” Bhakta Charan Das added. Stating that the BJP did not get the mandate in the 2017 election, he accused the party of using “violent means” in forming the government.
“The former union minister further asserted that BJP should not teach the people about peace. Be it in the Centre or state, they came to power at the cost of violence”, he said.
Maintaining that the Godhra incident has not been forgotten, he alleged that the 2019 Lok Sabha election was won by the BJP at the cost of the lives of soldiers in Pulwama.
Stating that people of Manipur understand very well “what type of peace is available in Manipur”, Bhakta Charan Das maintained that the people of the state know which party stands for peace.
