Mapithel Dam Affected Headmen, Chiefs & Elders Organisation announced a 48-hour shutdown on Imphal-Kamjong and Imphal-Ukhrul roads from October 6 against the government’s inaction in distributing economic livelihood rehabilitation packages and compensation to those affected by Mapithel Dam. If the government paid no heed to the demands, the shutdown may continue indefinitely, it added.

Mapithel Dam Affected Headmen, Chiefs & Elders Organisation, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, and Imphal East district held a press conference at the Manipur Press Club on Tuesday regarding the matter. Chairman of the organisation M Ngaranmi said that as construction of the dam has led to the submergence of houses and arable lands, people affected by it have been reeling under lots of hardships.

As such, on December 4, 2020, the organisation and Government of Manipur signed a 15-point memorandum of understanding for economic livelihood rehabilitation packages and compensation. September 25, 2021 was set as the deadline for fulfilling those demands, he added.

M Ngaranmi also said although around 60 per cent of the affected people have been compensated, there has been no word for the remaining 40 per cent. If the government does not respond even after the 48-hours shutdown, several agitations will follow, including indefinite shutdown of the roads, he warned.
