The 4th Tangkhul Naga Wungnao couples’ retreat began on Friday at Hongmahn Village. Celebrated under the theme “Inclusive Social Change vis-a-vis Customary Practices” the programme will wind up on March 28, 2022. The programme is jointly organised by Tangkhul Chief Association and Tangkhul Chieftess Assocaition and hosted by the Chief of Hongmahn Village.
President of Tangkhul Naga Wungnao Long, SA Ramnganing hoisted the ceremonial flag of the couples retreat in the presence of Headman of Hongmahn, Mathankhui Zimik, Chairperson of Tangkhul Awungvą Saklong (Tangkhul Chieftess Assocaition), CH. Ngasailei, TNWL General Secretary, Kaphaoleng Angkang, Hongmahn Baptist Church Pastor, MK Standhope, UBC pastor Rev. Remember Rimai and congregation of village chiefs and their better halves from across Tangkhul community.
He stated that the sole purpose of organizing such programme is to bring together the various cheif and chieftess of Tangkhul villages under one platform to forge out a common vision for the betterment of the people. Stating that the age-old Tangkhul tradition has reposed immense social and customary responsibilities upon all village village headmen and their better halves, he added: “Today, we are here to reason together.” He also stressed on the importance and the role of Cheiftess and their participation in governance of day to day life.
SA Ramnganing stated that with the coming of modern world, the old age practices of our forefathers have slowly erode and our culture and tradition is being diluted with outside influences. He remarked that this celebration will be meaningful only if we all stand together, come together and pave way to revive our customary practices. He also said that responsibility of motherhood is immense,and urged Awungvą (wives of headmen) to live up to the customary standard.
Pastor of UBC, Rev. Remember Rimai was the speaker of the day. Chairperson of Tangkhul Awungvą Saklong, CH. Ngasailei and Chief of Hongmahn Village, Mathankhui Zimik delivered welcome speech. MLA of 45-Chingai Assembly Constituency, Khashim Vashum will unveil the monolith on Saturday.
