Two-day training on traditional basket weaving that began at the training hall of Ukhrul Forest Division, Phungreitang, Ukhrul on September 14 concluded on Wednesday.
The project is being taken up under the scheme Pradhan Mantri Van Dhan Yojana (PMVDY), a project of Nodal Department – Forest Department Governmment of Manipur and implemented by Divisional Forest Officer, Ukhrul Forest Division at district level.
DFO of Ukhrul, Shanngam Shaliwo stated that “the project aims to promote tribal enterprise through value addition, branding and marketing of forest produces.”
Around 30 people participated in the two days training. The training on traditional basket weaving was imparted by Chokchai Mungleng, Canaan Mungleng, Vareiyo Mungleng, Chinaongam Hongray and Paul Mungleng all from Shirui village. The trainers brought Ngarik- a small type of bamboo found in the Forest of Shirui Range. The elders taught the participants on how to separate the outer and inner layers of the bamboos for making traditional basket. After the separation process, the elders taught them how to weave the traditional bamboo basket, locally known as “Sopkai” which is use for carrying firewoods, vegetables and almost anything. Sopkai is an integral part of any family for carrying things but mostly for farmers.
Trainer Wonlungla Zingkhai also trained the participants on making carry bags with plastic ropes as an alternative to single-use plastic bags.
Participants expressed gratitude to the Ukhrul Forest Division for organising such programme and thanked the trainers and elders for passing on the invaluable knowledge and skills.
