Thousands of depositors thronged the office of the Salai Holdings Private Limited located at Tera Loukrakpam Leikai on Friday demanding their money back. A meeting was held between the representatives of the depositors and the company. Salai Holdings private limited Managing Director (MD) Elangbam Brojendro and two other officials were picked up by Lamphel police soon after that.

According to the depositors, Salai had “promised” to pay back their investments on Friday. And the thousands of depositors started arriving at the office in the morning.

As the MD did not come to the office, a large number of depositors tried to go to the residence of Brojendro at Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai. But they were stopped by Manipur police. Later, Brojendro and the treasurer of Salai Akoijam Deepa Anand were “brought” to the Salai office at Tera, according to the depositors.

A meeting was convened at the office between some representatives and the Salai officials. The Joint Action Committee for SALAI Depositors Manipur also submitted a representation to the MD demanding to pay back the amount of money of the members deposited to SMART Society (a subsidiary of the Salai Holdings Private Limited) immediately.

The representation also demanded the list of movable and immovable assets along with relevant documents and the list of bank accounts of Smart Society and SALAI Holdings Private Limited. It further urged to provide the list of the depositors along with the statement of accounts of all the amount of money deposited to SMART Society by the members and the balance sheets from beginning to October 30 2019 and till date in year-wise.

Later, Brojendro, using a loudspeaker, addressed the large number of depositors gathered outside the office. He stated that the company was helpless as all the assets have been “freezed” by the government. He urged the depositors to “approach” the state government to find a solution.

Shortly after, the crowd was dispersed by the police personnel who were present around the office.  Brojendro, Deepa Anand and another official of the company were picked up by the OC of Lamphel PS and whisked away from the area. It could not be ascertained on what charges they were picked up at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, the depositors went towards the Chief Minister’s Secretariat at Babupara. But the police foiled the attempt while some of the depositors were waiting for others.

Speaking to TFM, Joint Action Committee for SALAI Depositors Manipur chairman Wahengbam Joykumar Singh alleged that the imbroglio reeks of political dealings behind the door. He lamented that the “democratic voice” of the depositors were not heard by the government. Maintaining that the depositors were being victimised, he asserted that they were being exploited economically.
