Coalition Against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) on Sunday reiterated that the arrest of its activist Sintha Laishram won’t be able to suppress the protest against release of drug lords and demanded that he should be released immediately without any condition.

CADA’s protest against the inaction and silence of the state government on the Lhukhosei Zou case and Phoudel drug case continued on Sunday. A sit-in was held at Ningombam Makha Mamang Leikai Community Hall, Imphal West. It was organised by Ningombam Makha Mamang Leikai Meira Paibi and CADA Imphal West District Committee, according to a release by CADA.

Speaking on the issue, CADA secretary women affairs Takhellambam (O) Purnima reaffirmed the CADA’s stand that Sintha’s arrest won’t be able to quell the people’s movement against drugs.

CADA along with local clubs and Meira Paibi groups have been protesting in different parts of the state for more than three months. It is unfortunate that the government is trying to thwart efforts to organise protest by intimidating CADA’s activists, she added.

CADA Thoubal District Committee general secretary Sintha Laishram (27) was arrested by Thoubal Police Commando on April 7. He has been charged under Section 39 of the UAPA. Accused of being an overground worker of an unlawful organisation, Sintha has been remanded to police custody till April 12.

On the day of the arrest, Sintha had shared photographs of a sit-in held at Heirok Part II on social media platforms. It was organised by Ningol Club, Heirok and CADA Thoubal District Committee. Interestingly, according to Ningol Club president Sofia Khundongbam, the Thoubal SP had called her up over the phone after the protest and was particularly miffed at one of the placards used during the sit-in – “chief minister should resign”.
