Minority panel seeks Manipur government’s report on status of Mt Koubru, Thangjing Hill

National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has sought a detailed report on the status of Mt Koubru and Thangjing Hill from the Chief Secretary (CS) of Manipur. The NCM research officer S Najeeb Ahmad in a letter to Manipur CS dated April 13, 2021, sought a detailed report on the matter within 21 days, so as to place the matter before the Commission for its consideration.

Meanwhile, the International Human Rights Association (IHRA), Manipur State has also urged the Government of Manipur to send a “proper and genuine” report relevant to the rights of indigenous people guaranteed by the United Nations through UNDRIP, 2007.

Earlier, Mark Thangmang Haokip who is also the president of IHRA Manipur had apparently sent a representation to the commission urging the authorities “to cancel Manipur Government plans to snatch away of Koupru Hill Rang in Sadar Hills District and Thangting Hill range in Loikhai, Churachandpur” on February 17, 2021. 


Mark Thangmang Haokip on Sunday appealed to all civil society organisations, church leaders, tribal leaders, student communities, village chiefs including other organisations in Manipur not to meddle in the matter (the National Commission for Minorities File No.B/MN/113/00001/2021 sent to the Government of Manipur concerning Mt Koubru and Thangjing Hill).

Mark Thangmang Haokip further warned that the Government of Manipur will be held “directly responsible if any untoward issues pop up concerning the issue in future”.
