Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly condemned the violent protest carried out by a team of BJP workers led by union minister of state Pratima Bhoumik and BJP state unit’s youth wing president Barish Sharma in front of the MPCC office in Imphal on Thursday.

The protest was against the alleged security breach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Congress-ruled Punjab on December 5. The protestors came in the evening on Thursday during the rush hour and burnt the effigies of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, while shouting several “unsavoury” slogans.

Addressing media persons at Congress Bhawan, MPCC president N Loken said that some of the protesters also stormed the gate of the Congress office at BT Road and kicked at the main gate. A Congress youth wing leader was also allegedly assaulted at the gate, he added.

Loken also asserted that the narrative of the alleged security breach was cooked up to cover up the unsuccessful BJP rally to be addressed by PM Modi. They cannot simply blame the Congress government of Punjab as if there is no rule in the country, he added.

“The violent incident on Thursday was conducted by the BJP after realising that they are going to be defeated in the upcoming election,” he said.

The MPCC also drew the attention of the DGP, alleging that the police were surrounding the BJP workers and letting them carry out the violent protest. He also reminded the police that the next government will be formed by the Congress.

Loken maintained that there is a strong youth wing of Congress. But as we are a party rooted in non-violence, we will never walk the path of violence, he added.

He also informed that an FIR has been lodged against Barish Sharma and the party is mulling the same against union minister of state Pratima Bhoumik.
