Manipur government revokes NSA against journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem

Kishorchandra was released from the Manipur Central Jail on July 23, after the High Court of Manipur intervened. However, the charges under NSA were not revoked, until November 27.

The Manipur government has finally revoked the National Security Act slapped against journalist Kishorchandra Wangkhem. 

The government advocate on Monday informed the High Court of Maniour that the order dated May 17, 2021 passed by the district magistrate of Imphal West invoking Section 3(2) of the National Security Act, 1980, has been revoked on November 27. The deputy secretary (Home), Government of Manipur, has issued an order to this effect, he added. 

The High Court was hearing a suo motu writ petition, taken up on the letter petition filed by the wife of Kishorchandra Wangkhem, Elangbam Ranjita, challenging her husband’s detention under NSA. 

On May 13, 2021, Kishorechandra Wangkhem had uploaded a post on Facebook, which the complainants alleged that it deliberately and wilfully insulted and outraged the religious feelings and sentiments of BJP workers and family members on the occasion of demise of the president of BJP Manipur Pradesh namely, late S Tikendra Singh. He was arrested the same day and the state government slapped him with the NSA later. 

Kishorchandra was released from the Manipur Central Jail on July 23, after the High Court of Manipur intervened. However, the charges under NSA were not revoked, until November 27. 

The High Court of Manipur on Monday closed the writ petition stating that as the NSA has been revoked, no orders need to be passed.
