Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday hit the campaign trail in Manipur and accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to destroy the future of the state by creating palm oil plantations, stating that it is meant to help only big companies like Patanjali.

“That is not a vision for Manipur. We are not interested in helping Baba Ramdev and punishing the people of Manipur. We are interested in protecting the future of the people of Manipur,” he said while addressing an election rally at Hapta Kangjeibung, Imphal.

The Congress leader lashed out at the BJP and RSS stating that the Congress is fighting their idea of “one ideology, one idea, one language”.

“There is the BJP vision which we fight. Their vision is that there is one ideology, one idea, one language that is superior to all other ideas, languages, and all other cultures. This is the battle that is taking place in India today,” said Rahul Gandhi.

The Congress leader asserted that when BJP and RSS come to Manipur, they come not with respect, not with understanding. They come with a sense of superiority. When I come here, I don’t come with a sense of superiority, I come with humility, he added.

Regarding his recent speech in the parliament over the definition of India that the country is a union of states, Rahul Gandhi said that the BJP and the RSS reacted to his speech.

“Did it not like that I said India was a Union of States? There are two definitions of our country. One definition that it is a union of states, a union of people where every single state has an equal right in India” Rahul Gandhi said.

This one vision of India, is the vision that we believe in. Every state has an equal right to have culture, history, language. That is our vision, he said.

Rahul Gandhi further said that there is a lot that he can learn from Manipur — from the diverse tribes, from the valley, from the hills, from everybody in the state.

“I want to help preserve your language, I want to help to preserve your culture, I want to help to preserve the harmony prevailing in Manipur,” he added.

Over the recent controversy where some MLAs from Manipur were allegedly asked to remove their shoes while entering the home of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Rahul Gandhi said that it was not an Indian culture.

Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the BJP, stating that the party was assaulting the culture, history, tradition and language of the people of Manipur. Even as they claim to have brought governance to the doorsteps of the people, the elections to the ADC have not been held in the last five years, he said, adding that the BJP is taking away the “democratic structure, democratic institutions and democratic values” from the people.

When Narendra Modi came to power in 2014 he had promised many things, but when he comes to Manipur on Tuesday, he won’t be talking about employment, depositing Rs 15 lakhs to bank accounts of every citizen, farmer’s income, demonetisation, botched up GST, the retracted three farm laws amongst others, he said.

After landing in Imphal, Rahul Gandhi paid floral tributes to the martyrs at Shaheed Minar and Nupi Lal Complex. He later visited the famous Ema Market and interacted with the Imas (mothers) there. An interaction session with the Congress workers was also held at Congress Bhawan, Imphal.
