A group of BJP workers led by suspected armed Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA) cadres allegedly attacked Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) supporters at Maokot village, Suangdoh Subdivision of Churachandpur district around 8:00 pm on Thursday. At least two KPA supporters were in the attack. The injured were identified as Thangbem Haokip, the chief agent of KPA candidate of 60-Singhat AC and Thangtung –a KPA supporter.
The incident occurred when Thangbem Haokip along with Mrs Muanching, the wife of Chinlunthang Zou (KPA Candidate of 60-Singhat AC) and a woman assistant went to Maokot to meet their workers. Source said, as soon as they stopped their vehicle, groups of armed and unarmed men came out of a house and started attacking them physically without any warning.
They hit the KPA chief agent with sticks and rifle butts. As they assaulted the KPA chief agent, some attackers forcibly snatched away the mobile phones, wallets and cash from the victims too. The armed ZRA also fired at Haokip’s car, damaging the left front-door and breaking the windshield. They also allegedly attacked and caused massive damage to the house of Ginzamuan, a KPA worker at Tuivel village situated nearby Maokot.
Source further stated that a police team from Singhat police station rushed to the scene to take stock of the situation and rescued the KPA supporters. Local news reporters, who visited the victims, stated that Thangbem Haokip was seriously injured at his head and taken to Samaritan Hospital, CCPur for treatment.
A police complaint was lodged against the assailants at Singngat police station in this connection. As reported, the supporters of the BJP candidate led by armed ZRA militants (SoO signatory) have incessantly been involved in serial acts of threatening, attacking, torturing and terrorizing the workers of the rival KPA candidate within Singngat subdivision in this 12th Assembly Election 2022.
